Casino Gambling in JamaicaPublished February 8, 2010
Jamaica readies itself for the introduction of casino gambling.
It has been a long time in the making, but finally Jamaica is making big strides towards completion of legislation for introducing casino gambling to the island nation.
The next steps
Jamaicans have long enjoyed games such as Caribbean Stud Poker variants provided by JackpotCity Casino and other leading online casino brands. Now the legislative committee is working overtime to complete talks on the Casino Gaming Bill.
The next steps for approving casino gambling
With so much interest in casino gambling in Jamaica, lawmakers are eager to see a decision being made as soon as possible. Information Minister Mr. Daryl Vaz - the current chairman of the Special Select Committee - requested an extension for the finalization of the Casino Gambling Bill.
The House of Representatives approved this two-week extension for the Special Select Committee of the House. Such is the eagerness of online casino operators and investors to tap into the lucrative Jamaican market that the government has been asked to roll back its proposed timetable for the finalized amendments to legislated gambling.
Workers will need to be employed
There is also a sense of concern among members of parliament in Jamaica - notably Phillip Paulwell - that Jamaica may need to hire foreign workers to fill the vacancies that will invariably be created in land-based casinos in Jamaica once the Bill has been finalized and gambling is legal.
The current Bill under consideration is aimed at establishing the regulatory framework from which casino legislation can be passed. Jamaica is home to some of the most exquisite and exotic island-style hotels in the world and the addition of top-class gambling facilities will completely enhance the tourist experience and drive revenues to an all-time high.
