Jamaica’s gambling industry is showing outstanding growth set to rival the nation’s tourism sector, and the exciting prospect of the country’s Princess Hotel casino and resort complex.
Jamaica is a small island nation in the West Indies whose economy is almost entirely dependent on tourism. It has been attempting to augment its tourism sector for several years by introducing land-based casinos with live dealer games and gameshow-themed entertainment.
There are no online casinos in Jamaica presently, although an application for the country’s first casino gaming licence is expected to be submitted to the regulator soon. The first such entertainment venue plans to begin operations in 2025.
However, over 5,000 establishments provide approximately 30,000 gaming machines across the island, under the control of the Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Commission (BGLC). This body governs the licensing, regulation, and monitoring of lotteries and all betting on non-casino gaming activities under the framework of the Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Act.
Gaining recognition as a hot gambling market, Jamaica’s gambling industry is experiencing an upturn with steady and sustained growth.
A recent study by a leading iGaming software provider suggests this trend will continue for the next few years. The study, which carried out an extensive investigation into the thriving Jamaican gambling market, established that the sector is growing at a CAGR of 6,31%.
The findings also suggested an ongoing upward trajectory, indicating substantial progress within the market and Jamaica is expected to experience strong economic growth on the back of its gambling industry.
Analysing 2022 in contrast to 2021 reveals a key indicator of the phenomenal growth of the gambling market in Jamaica. The country’s industry experienced substantial development, and the year-on-year growth for this period surpassed 24%.
Projections indicate a continued rise until 2027 when the anticipated revenue is expected to reach US$83,1 million.
Jamaica’s online gambling sector is undergoing significant transformation due to evolving regulatory frameworks and a rapidly growing demand for digital entertainment. The country has seen a significant increase in the popularity of online gambling platforms in recent years, indicating a marked shift in consumer preferences.
A strange state of affairs exists within the iGaming industry in Jamaica. It is legal to gamble online in the country, but only if you’re a tourist. Locals are technically prohibited from online gambling activities, except in the case of horse race betting.
This means that Jamaica cannot benefit from the revenue derived from this sector, but with current global trends for expanded iGaming activities, this is likely to change soon.
The country’s first casino is expected to open for business in 2025. Built by the Princess Hotel chain at its resort complex under development in Hanover, the gambling establishment is a crucial component of the second phase of the resort project.
The resort is expected to open in mid-to-late 2025. Plans to add another 1,000 rooms to the property will bring the total number of rooms to over 2,000, making it a Jamaican landmark.
